Scope note
- Form of tourism that centers on visits οf monuments and sites of cultural and historic importance. Cultural tourism is a reaction to the mass tourism of the second half of the 20th century. It is included in post-industrial consumption patterns that promote personalised services and experiences of recreation and knowledge, which give meaning to notions of identity and alterity. Cultural tourism originates in the tradition of the educational voyages of the European elites. It is now supported by an international system of services and promotion that deploys widely spread narratives of cultural traditions, history, and authenticity.
