Scope note
- Costume is the dress of an actor/performer who represents a character on stage, or in film or television. The theatrical costume defines the character the actor impersonates in the place and time of the dramatic action. It signifies their social status and psychological state, while at the same time emphasising the dramatic position and the internal relationship of the characters of a performance. Costumes give the spectator explicit information about age, gender, profession or social class, the place and time of the action. They are not a complete whole unless presented to the audience, creating a parallel, visual narrative plane that complements the actor’s words and movements.
