Scope note
- Devices that are created and used for observations, measurements and interpretations of the natural world. Scientific instruments have had a crucial role in scientific investigation of natural world and in discovery of new truths about nature since the 17th century. Until then, they had no place in the science that dealt with causes and explanations in the material world, and they were mostly used to solve problems and produce practical results, such as casting a horoscope, telling the time, finding the latitude, or drawing a map.
