Scope note
- Leader of a monarchical state. Kingship is usually hereditary and the king's power may be absolute or restricted, or his role may be purely ceremonial and symbolic. In many regions of the world kingship had been for centuries invested with sacral meaning and was regarded as a manifestation of divine will.
