Scope note
- Elected representative of a constituency, member of a national (or federal or autonomous) parliament. In countries with a bicameral system, Members of Parliament are the members of the lower house. The duties of the Members of Parliament are defined by the Constitution in the framework of the exertion of legislative power, while their tenure depends on the parliamentary term. Members of Parliament who belong to the same party form parliamentary groups. In countries with a pure parliamentary system the governmental positions (certainly the one of the prime minister) are as a rule occupied by Members of Parliament, while in countries with a strict separation between the executive and legislative branch the members of the government are not Members of Parliament.
