Scope note

  • The natural process through which biological organisms differ from their ancestors through modifications in the inherited properties that take place in a population of a species over a course of generations. The notion that organisms are related by descent was first debated within the life sciences during the second half of the 18th century and it was established in the second half of the 19th century with the darwinian theory. However, the word “evolution” had already been used in the 17th and 18th centuries to denote individual, embryonic development, not descent.
