Scope note
- Numismatics is the study of coins, weights and measures. The research focuses on coin types, iconography, inscriptions, die study, mints and weight standards. Numismatics contribute substantially to both archeology and history: coins are an indicator of the monetisation of societies and reflect economic conditions that prevail at a specific time and place, they reveal the ideology of the issuing authority, and in the framework of archaeological excavations they provide one of the safest means of dating. Also, coin iconography can provide information for almost every aspect of a citie's life, i.e. religion, political life, everyday life etc.
