Anwendungshinweise

  • Groups of citizens who were obliged to pay tax (eisphora) or to undertake the liturgy of the trierarchy in Athens during the 4th century BC. The groups were made up of citizens with roughly the same amount of property so that members of a symmoria paid the same sums of money. The initial number of these groups was one hundred (100) and it changed several times when it was considered appropriate or when circumstances required it. The metics were assigned to special symmoriai and paid the sums specified for them, which were not the same as those paid by Athenian citizens. The institution of symmoriai appears in several city-states in ancient Greece.
