Anwendungshinweise

  • Silver decadrachms of the 5th c. BCE from Syracuse. They derived their name from an old theory that considered them to have been struck from the proceeds of a gift of one hundred talents of gold made by the defeated Carthaginians, after the battle of Himera (480 BCE), to Demarete, the wife of the tyrant Gelon. The exact date of their introduction is still a matter of controversy among researchers. The coins bear the image of a quadriga crowned by a flying Nike and a lion in the exergue as an obverse and the head of the nymph Arethusa wearing an olive wreath as a reverse.
