Anwendungshinweise

  • Ethnoreligious group of the Near East. Maronites are Arabic-speaking Catholic Christians who follow the Syriac rite and trace the origins of their Church in the ascetic St Maron, who was active in 4th and 5th-century Syria. During the intra-Christian conflicts of late antiquity, the Chalcedonian Church of the Maronites, together with its flock, moved toward the Mount of Lebanon. The Crusades brought the Maronites in close contact with the Catholic Church, and the Maronite Church entered the Catholic fold. The Maronites' concentration in the Mount of Lebanon, together with their distinct religious and confessional identity, contributed to their formation as an ethnoreligious group that is regarded today as a vital part of Lebanese society and politics. Many Maronites have migrated in European and American countries.
