Anwendungshinweise

  • Members of one of the most well known Sufi orders, due to its famous characteristic "whirling" meditative dance. It takes its name from the great 13th-century mystic poet Jalal al-din Rumi, who is known in Turkish as Mevlana (from the Arabic mawlana = “our master”). Though Rumi’s poetry was composed in Persian, the language of the Seljuk court, the order developed mostly in the Turkish environment of the Ottoman Empire, where it benefited from the patronage of Ottoman sultans. Mevlevi dervishes studied and produced art in their worship centres (tekkes). The order in general appealed to the upper classes and the intellectuals, and many Ottoman poets, composers, and calligraphers were Mevlevis.
